Building Hope…One Coin at a Time!
Through our Pillars Banks, we’re building hope, one coin at a time in support of our campaign for 4 “Pillars of Hope” in Kensington. Last November, Esperanza staff member Luis Rosado (photo, R) was the first person to bring in a full Pillars Bank, which contained $28 in coins (weighing over 4 lbs.). Since then, people from in and around our community have been joining in! During a recent gathering of our “Young at Heart” Seniors’ progra, between the proceeds from their bake sale and all the banks they brought in that day (weighing nearly 60 lbs. in total!), members of the group raised almost $500 to support the Pillars Campaign. Way to go, Seniors!

Story Times Promoting Early Literacy at EHC
With support from generous donors, Esperanza has continued to expand initiatives to promote early literacy. In January and February, we held new weekly bilingual Story Time & Creative Play sessions at our Hunting Park gymnasium in partnership with the Orange Korner Arts community arts program of Ayuda Community Center. Under the leadership of Marilyn Childs, Esperanza’s Literacy Coordinator, the program’s activities included family story times in both Spanish and English, songs, and creative play including dance, movement and crafts. Said community resident Lauren Vargas, whose children participated in the program: “Story Time has been a fun way to bring families together to read to kids in both Spanish and English. With a creative play time in between story sessions, kids get to make a craft and dance related to the theme and letter of the day. It’s also been a great way for parents in our community to connect and build relationships with each other too!”
