Centering Pregnancy Groups

Esperanza now offers a bilingual group model of prenatal care, Centering Pregnancy Groups, at two sites: Hunting Park and Kensington!

How are Centering Pregnancy Groups different than a Prenatal visit?

Pregnant moms usually get medical care in prenatal visits between one patient and one provider. Prenatal visits are less than 20 minutes long, but sometimes the waiting time can be hours long. Centering Pregnancy Groups are a different type of medical visit in which groups of 8-12 pregnant women meet with the medical provider and other staff for 2 hours, with no wait time. These groups provide the opportunity to learn more about healthy behaviors during pregnancy while developing relationships with other moms.

How do Centering Pregnancy Groups work?

Each Centering Pregnancy Group comes together for a total of 10 sessions. In the beginning months, these sessions are monthly. Later in the pregnancy, the sessions are every 2 weeks. For the first hour, patients are able to meet individually with the medical provider and take their own blood pressure and weight. During the second hour the moms come together for group discussions and activities. Topics for discussion include nutrition, preparing for labor and delivery, birth control, breastfeeding, parenting and newborn care.

Who can come to the Centering Pregnancy Groups?

Patients of Esperanza who are pregnant can join a Centering Pregnancy Group. They will be registered in a group that has women with similar due dates. Moms can bring one support person to each session. That person can be a spouse, partner, friend, or relative. If moms have children, we ask that they make arrangements for childcare outside of Esperanza before coming to the session.

How can I register for a Centering Pregnancy Group?

Please ask your OB provider at your first prenatal visit.
