Bryan Hollinger, MD, MPH

Medical Director, Internal Medicine/Pediatrics Physician

Bryan Hollinger, MD, MPH is a board certified Internal Medicine/Pediatrics Physician and Medical Director at Esperanza Health Center. Dr. Hollinger has served as a physician at Esperanza Health Center since 1994, and has served as Esperanza’s Medical Director since 2000. He is a graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology and the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, and also holds a Masters degree in Public Health with emphasis in Epidemiology from the University of North Carolina’s School of Global Public Health. He enjoys enjoy biking, birding and camping with his family.

Katherine Baker, CRNP, MSN

Family Nurse Practitioner

Katherine Baker, CRNP, MSN is a board certified Family Nurse Practitioner at Esperanza Health Center. Originally from Delaware and a graduate of the University of Delaware, Ms. Baker received her graduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania School Of Nursing and previously worked as a medical oncology-hematology nurse at Christiana Hospital. She volunteered for Esperanza during the summer of 2006 and was incredibly impressed by the high quality care that patients receive and the way that the entire staff whole-heartedly follows Christ and shares his love with the community. Ms. Baker especially enjoys the opportunity to care for whole families and the diversity of caring for her patients of all ages.

Samantha Baker-Evens, CRNP, MSN

Family Nurse Practitioner

Samantha Baker-Evens, CRNP, MSN is a board certified Family Nurse Practitioner at Esperanza Health Center and joined the clinical team in 2017. She has worked in the areas of addiction, mental health, HIV/AIDS and homelessness for the last twenty years in the United States, Australia, and Cambodia. She is passionate about making primary care safe and accessible, particularly for people living with developmental differences or mental illness. She is an enthusiastic failure at gardening in the city and also enjoys kayaking and walking in the woods. She and her husband have two sons and are exploring what it means to live lives of mercy and justice (Micah 6:8) as a family in Philadelphia.

Daniel Cha, DDS

Dentist

Daniel Cha, DDS joined Esperanza as a Dentist in October 2017. A graduate of Temple University, Dr. Cha received his DDS degree from the New York University College of Dentistry. He is a native of South Korea, and since moving to the United States he has also lived in Kansas, and now Philadelphia for 14 years. Dr. Cha is thankful for the opportunity to be a part of Esperanza’s ministry. He looks forward to serving, learning from and sharing in prayer with his patients.

Daria Chacón, MD

Associate Medical Director, Internal Medicine/Pediatrics Physician

Daria Chacón, MD is a board certified Internal Medicine/Pediatrics Physician and Associate Medical Director at Esperanza Health Center. Dr. Chacón completed her Medicine residency at the Hospital of University of Pennsylvania, and her Pediatrics residency at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. She lives in Camden, NJ with her husband and two daughters, and enjoys playing soccer, ice skating, and cooking with them. Charlene Chen, MD

Family Medicine Physician

Charlene Chen, MD, who joined Esperanza’s staff in 2013 as a board certified Family Medicine Physician, provides care for children, adults, and pregnant women. She loves getting to know and care for whole families, from birth to old age. Her husband, Daniel Chen, MD serves as an Internal Medicine Physician at Esperanza. Together, they enjoy seeing the beautiful ways God is working in North Philadelphia, and learning from all those around them here—especially their warmth and generosity. In her free time, she enjoys cooking and eating with her husband and their friends—their home is always open to anyone with a hungry belly!

Sarah Danford, CRNP, MSN

Family Nurse Practitioner

Sarah Danford, CRNP, MSN is a Family Nurse Practitioner at Esperanza Health Center. Ms. Danford joined Esperanza in 2016 after completion of her Masters in Nursing degree at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. Ms. Danford has significant experience working with disadvantaged communities in several countries including Ethiopia, Malaysia, Mexico and El Salvador. She previously worked as a medical assistant and nutrition educator with a federally-qualified health center serving Hispanic immigrant farm workers in Oregon. Ms. Danford serves in a leadership role with her church, Citylight Church in Philadelphia. In her free time, she enjoys finding unique recipes to cook with her husband, spending time with her nephews and hiking with her dog Luna in the Wissahickon.

Keri Duggan, CRNP, MSN

Pediatric Nurse Practitioner

Keri Duggan, CRNP, MSN is a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner at Esperanza Health Center. She is a graduate of Wheaton College and the Vanderbilt University School of Nursing, where she received her Master of Science in Nursing Degree and was a member of the Sigma Theta Tau nursing honor society. After having completed one of her preceptorships for graduate school in Philadelphia in the summer of 2015, Ms. Duggan fell in love with the city and decided to return to join Esperanza’s clinical team in 2017. She is eager to serve her patients and their families and to learn from them. In her spare time, she enjoys running, hiking, reading, playing lacrosse, and spending time with family and friends.

John Esterhai, MD

Orthopaedic Specialist

John Esterhai, MD joined Esperanza in 2017 as an Orthopaedic Specialist. Dr. Esterhai is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and a lifetime member of the Christian Medical and Dental Associations. Carol, his wife of 48 years, and he are the parents of two adult children and grandparents of three girls and three boys. He was a USAF Flight Surgeon at Kadena AFB, Okinawa, Japan from 1973-1976 and then a Ready Reserve Flight Surgeon at McGuire AFB in New Jersey from 1976-1979. Dr. Esterhai was Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and stopped working at Penn in 2016 after thirty-six years of active surgical practice, research, and teaching. He enjoys spending more time with his wife and family, splitting wood, canoeing, fishing, and camping. His wife and he have been blessed by opportunities to serve in Saint Lucia, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica, and their worship at Oreland Evangelical Presbyterian Church. Their prayer for all who minister at Esperanza and the communities served is Paul’s from Philippians 1:9-12, “That your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.”

Associate Medical Director for Quality Assurance, Family Nurse Practitioner

Diane Filter, CRNP, MSN, MPH is a board certified Family Nurse Practitioner at Esperanza and also serves as the health center’s Associate Medical Director for Quality Assurance, where she oversees all of Esperanza’s quality assurance initiatives. She has worked at Esperanza Health Center since 2009. A graduate of Roberts Wesleyan College, she earned her Master of Science in Nursing and Master of Public Health degrees from Columbia University. Ramon Gadea, MD, AAHIVS joined Esperanza’s staff in 2015 as a board certified Internal Medicine/Infectious Disease specialist. Originally from Puerto Rico, Dr. Gadea is a graduate of Ponce School of Medicine in Ponce, PR. Dr. Gadea previously served as a physician at Esperanza; he served as Esperanza’s Medical Director from 1996 to 2000, and was director of Esperanza’s HALOS HIV care ministry from 2000 to 2004. He is thankful for the opportunity to again be a part of Esperanza’s team and to provide care to the people of the North Philadelphia community.

K. Pamela (Pam) Garcia, MD is a board certified Family Medicine Physician, who began her career as a hematology/oncology nurse at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. She is an AOA graduate of Drexel University College of Medicine, and the family medicine residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Dr. Garcia joined Esperanza in 2015. She enjoys swimming, kayaking, taking part in adventures with friends, the student-run community clinics in southeast Philly, and the JFMA book club. She is also active with Tenth Presbyterian Church’s Medical Campus Outreach, mentoring students and supporting residents. Mai-Khanh Gunther, LCSW is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Behavioral Health Consultant at Esperanza Health Center. She first discovered a passion for inner-city work while living in Camden, NJ, and doing children’s ministry. She also gained rich experience from volunteering at an orphanage in Mexico. Ms. Gunther is thankful to work as part of her familia at Esperanza to promote physical and spiritual healing through Jesus’ love. Randal Hirsch, MD

Family Medicine Physician

Randal Hirsch, MD is a board certified Family Medicine Physician at Esperanza Health Center. A California native, Dr. Hirsch and family moved to Philadelphia in 2005 to work at Esperanza after 22 years of practicing medicine in Southern California. In 2013 he and his wife celebrated their 25th anniversary in Puerto Rico. Timothy Johnston, MD

Timothy Johnston, MD is a board certified Internal Medicine/Pediatrics Physician and Hunting Park Site Medical Director at Esperanza Health Center. He has worked at Esperanza Health Center since 2006. Dr. Johnston enjoys playing trombone and piano, camping, reading, and biking, though playing with his four young girls is what he usually enjoys in his free time these days. He delights in recruiting patients to be his partners moving towards health. He is committed to remaining as current as possible in the science of medicine, but also wants to help his patients look out for some ways that medical science tends to move patients away from true health. As a weak, limited man, he seeks the power and direction of the great physician Jesus Christ in leading patients toward health. His favorite piece of Scripture is Psalm 69:13: “But as for me, my prayer is to you, O LORD. At an acceptable time, O God, in the abundance of your steadfast love, answer me in your saving faithfulness.”

Meridith Kim, PsyD

Meridith Kim, PsyD is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Behavioral Health Consultant at Esperanza Health Center. She earned her Doctorate in Psychology at Widener University and completed a post-doctoral program at the CARES Institute in Stratford, NJ. Dr. Kim studied Spanish in Costa Rica during college, completed clinical training at Esperanza as a graduate student, and returned as a full-time employee in 2016. She is passionate about equipping the church in spiritual and emotional care. When not at Esperanza, Dr. Kim loves being a part of the life of her local church family at Grace & Peace Community Church, and her neighborhood in South Philadelphia. She and her husband enjoy learning to cook Korean food, watching movies, and maintaining their tiny urban backyard garden.

Tara Kinra, MD

Tara Kinra, MD is a board certified Pediatrician at Esperanza Health Center. Dr. Kinra joined the Esperanza staff in 2013 after completing her residency in Pediatrics at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, Texas where she grew up. While attending medical school in Galveston, TX at the University of Texas Medical Branch, she was thankful to have been part of a bilingual church which helped her become fluent in Spanish. Timothy Leaman, MD

Timothy Leaman, MD is a board certified Family Medicine Physician and is the Kensington Site Medical Director at Esperanza Health Center. A graduate of Eastern Mennonite University and the Temple University School of Medicine, he has worked at Esperanza Health Center since 2001. Dr. Leaman enjoys ethnic restaurants, reading, and following the Philadelphia sports teams. His approach to medicine is to help people and communities to experience health and well-being physically, emotionally and spiritually. He desires to see those who live in our communities stay healthy, so that they can participate in restoring/rebuilding our neighborhoods (Isaiah 61:1-4; “They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord…They will restore the places long devastated”). Christopher Leander, MD

His favorite piece of scripture is 2 Corinthians 4:16-18: “Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” His approach to medicine is to build relationships with children and families and look for ways to promote healthy growth and development: help to “bring out” the image of God in which they were created. Dr. Leander and his family reside in the North Philadelphia community served by Esperanza.

Tabitha Miller, RD, LDN, CDE is a Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator at Esperanza Health Center. She has worked at Esperanza Health Center since 2006. She and her husband David met in Guatemala in 2005 while she was completing her language training to work at Esperanza. Since that time they have seen God guide and direct them to the place they are now with David on staff at Calvary Chapel of Philadelphia and her working part-time at Esperanza and caring for their two small children the rest of the time. Robert Reich, PA-C, MSPAS

Director of Care Management/Physician Assistant

Robert Reich, PA-C, MSPAS serves as Esperanza’s Director of Care Management and as part-time Physician Assistant. Mr. Reich is a summa cum laude graduate of Cedarville University, and received his Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from Beaver College (now Arcadia University). He joined Esperanza’s clinical staff in 2000 as a Physician Assistant, and in 2011 he led the formation of Esperanza’s Department of Community Health and Wellness as the department’s director. Mr. Reich also led the start-up of Esperanza’s bilingual Community Health Promoter program in 2010, which to date has graduated nearly 300 health promoters. His wife, Esther, serves as a part-time lactation consultant at Esperanza. Their family resides in the Hunting Park community near Esperanza’s Hunting Park health and wellness center.

Family Nurse Practitioner

Kristin Romeo, CRNP, MSN is a board certified Family Nurse Practitioner at Esperanza Health Center. She decided to become a nurse after spending two years in the Peace Corps living in an indigenous village in Ecuador, where she saw the effects of healthcare disparities. Ms. Romeo also previously worked for Doctors Without Borders on assignments in South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Honduras. She enjoys eating her grandmom’s homemade ravioli, reading all kinds of books, and spending time with family. She is thankful to have the privilege of working at Esperanza, where she continues to learn so much from her patients and colleagues, and where she has the opportunity of daily witnessing the work that God is doing in North Philadelphia.

Prior to joining Esperanza in 2017, Sister Oanh worked as a medical-surgical critical care nurse and has been volunteering since 2013 at Community Volunteers in Medicine, a free community clinic in West Chester, PA. Sister Oanh is a member of Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, an international Catholic religious congregation.
